Effects of Fusarium oxysporum Infection on Root Growth of Hull-less Cucurbito pepo
To investigate the effect of F.oxysporum infection on root growth of hull-less Cucurbita pepo, root scanning and spectrophotometric methods were used to assess changes in root growth pa-rameters,root activity and lignin content in different resistant varieties of hull-less Cucurbita pepo. The results showed that the root growth index and root activity of hull-less Cucurbita pepo decreased compared to the control, whereas the lignin content increased after F.oxysporum infection. However, the total root length, root surface area, root volume, root activity and lignin content in resistant varie-ties were significantly higher than in susceptible varieties. On the 5th day of inoculation, the lignin content in the root system of the resistant variety treatment group was 1.35 times that of the suscepti-ble variety. At 7 and 9 days after inoculation, the number of root tips and branches in the treatment group of resistant varieties was 1.28 times and 1.24 times that of susceptible variety after inoculation, respectively. The root activity of the resistant and susceptible varieties peaked on the 9th days after in-oculation,with the root activity of resistant variety being 1.14 times that of susceptible variety. The results provide an important theoretical basis for further studies on the effects of F.oxysporum infec-tion on the root growth of different resistant varieties of hull-less Cucurbito pepo.
