Observation of Antenna and Antennal Sensilla of Aethina tumida(Coleoptera:Nitdiuldae)Adults by Scanning Electron Microscope
The morphology and distribution of antennal sensillain female and male adults of Aethina tumida were observed using scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that there was a little difference in the types, distribution, and number of the antennal sensilla between female and male adults.Eight types of sensilla(21 subtypes)were identified on the antennae, including sensilla tri-chodea(ST,3 subtypes),sensilla basiconica(SB,6 subtypes),sensilla chaetica(SC,4 subtypes),sensilla styloconica(SS,2 subtypes),sensilla coeloconica(SCo,2 subtypes),sensilla cavity(SCa),sensilla auricillica(SA,2 subtypes)and böhm bristles(BB).Sensilla trichodea and sensilla basiconica were the most abundant types.Furthermore, cuticular pores were observed on the antennae. The length of ST3,SB1,SB2,SB3,SC1,SCo1,SA1 and SA2 were significantly longer in females than in males, while those of SB4,SB5 and SCo2 were significantly shorter in females than in males. The bas-al diameter of ST3,SB2,SB3 and SB4 was significantly longer in females than in males, while that of SB6 was significantly shorter in females than in males.
