Internationalization at Home of Higher Education:A Global Perspective and Implications for China
Internationalization of higher education is a prominent characteristic of educational openness.Currently, the predominant model of internationalization in higher education, which revolves around cross-border mobility,is facing the challenges.Scholars are increasingly focusing on Internationalization at Home(IaH).IaH aims to cultivate international and cross-cultural competencies among all students, enhance the internationalization and governance capabilities of higher education institutions, foster cultural diversity within institutions, and deliver culturally sensitive internationalized curriculum and teaching to facilitate inter-country dialogue and sharing. Many countries worldwide are implementing localized internationalization through national strategies, institutional policies, international programs, and student integration.China's practice of localized internationalization has entered a new historical stage but still faces the challenges. In the process of"overtaking on the curve"and"changing lanes"in internationalization of higher education,China should prioritize talent development, promote knowledge flow, guide strategic transformation, enhance the capacity for"local study abroad"services, create a distinctive Chinese style international campus environment, reshape international curriculum models and practices, implement culturally sensitive teaching, strengthen cultural guidance, and promote"fluidity"in IaH through micro-credential programs.
