A Study of"How dared the ghost's son did this"in A New Account of the Tales of the World
In Article 18 of the Fang Zheng category of A New Account of the Tales of the World,Lu Ji angrily cursed Lu Zhi for"How dared the ghost's son did this".This was first mentioned in Guo Zi,but the expression was different.Liu Xiaobiao cited the rumor of"Lu Chong's ghost marriage"to explain why Lu Zhi was called"the ghost's son"in annotating A New Account of the Tales of the World.However,the term"the ghost's son"car-ries a strong derogatory meaning,which is quite different from the rumored attitude towards the Lu family,indi-cating that"the ghost marriage"is insufficient to explain why Lu Zhi was called"the ghost's son".The associa-tion with Taoism created a connection between the Lu family and the theory of ghosts and gods.The failure of Lu Xun also led to the decline of the Lu family's status in the Southern Dynasties,affecting the writing of Lu Zhi category of A New Account of the Tales of the World.Among numerous versions,the author of A New Account of the Tales of the World chose the term"the ghost's son"to illustrate the characteristics of the creator's emotion and attitude through details.In addition,the different attitudes of literature towards rumors of"the ghost's mar-riage"in different periods reflect the impact of changes in family status on the evaluation of family ancestors.
