A Study on the Influence of Student Background Factors on the Academic Performance of Graduate Students
Graduate students are the reserve force of high-level scientific research talents and the cultivation quality of graduate students is closely related to national scientific and technological innovation and industry development. This study examines the influence of three dimensions of stu-dent background factors, which are undergraduate university background, undergraduate profession-al background, and means of admission on the academic performance of graduate students. The study finds that graduate students who study in the same universtiy at the undergraduate and graduate level or studied in a less selective university at the undergraduate level, graduate students whose graduate major is the same as their undergraduate major, and graduate students who are exempt from admis-sion exam receive significantly more scholarships during their graduate studies. The further subsam-ple regression analysis shows that the academic performance advantage of graduate students who study in the same universtiy at the undergraduate and graduate level or study in a less selective uni-versity at the undergraduate level only exists for students who were addmitted through the unified ex-amination;The academic performance disadvantage of cross-discipline graduate students no longer exists for the students who study in the same universtiy at the undergraduate and graduate level. In order to improve the cultivation quality of graduate students,it is suggested that universities attach more importance to the connection of knowledge and skills between undergraduate and graduate stag-es,and continue to persist with the recommended entrance exam free policy. In addition, universities should avoid discriminating against students from lower-level universities in the process of recruit-ment and cultivation of graduate students, especially when recruiting students who are addmitted through the unified examination, and universities should also provide more opportunities for under-graduate students who are interested in cross-disciplinary graduate studies to continue their studies in the same university.
