Correlationship of symptoms and quality of life among elderly cancer patients from rural areas
Objective To investigate common symptoms during hospitalisation in aged cancer patients from the rural areas in Shanxi Province,analyse the relationship of symptom groups and the quality of life,therefore to explore the influencing factors of the quality of life.Methods A total of 597 hospitalised aged cancer patients in 9 hospitals,between 1st July and 8th August,2022,from rural areas in Shanxi Province were included in the study by convenience sampling method.The M.D.Anderson Symptom Inventory(Chinese version)MDASI)and the functional assessment of cancer therapy(FACT-Chinese version)were employed in the investigation.The correlation between them was analyzed by Pearson correlation.Results The top 4 symptoms of hospitalized rural aged cancer patients in Shanxi Province were fatigue(75.88%),poor appetite(75.54%),restless sleep(66.83%)and distress(66.33%).Emotion was the with the highest incidence(65.83%)in rural aged cancer patients.The four symptom groups of aged cancer patients in rural areas were gastrointestinal symptoms(nausea and vomiting),neuro-related symptoms(sleepiness,dry mouth,numbness,forgetfulness,shortness of breath),fatigue symptoms(pain,fatigue,appetite loss)and emotional symptoms(distress,sadness,restless sleep).The total score of quality of life of rural aged cancer patients in hospital was(55.33±8.46),which was in the middle level.The four symptom groups of rural aged cancer patients were significantly negatively correlated with their quality life(all P<0.001).Conclusion Aged rural cancer patients hospitalized in Shanxi Province are plagued by a variety of symptoms,which synergistically form four symptom groups,and the scores of each symptom group are negatively correlated with the quality of life,which has a certain impact on their quality of life.We should timely evaluate and actively manage them to reduce the burden of symptoms and improve the quality of life of patients.
