Research on the Spatiotemporal Characteristics of Urban Development in Nairobi and Mombasa Based on Nighttime Light Remote Sensing
Based on long time series NPP/VIIRS nighttime light data, using methods such as standard deviation ellipse, spatial autocorrelation, and related softwares, this paper analyzes the spatiotemporal characteristics of urban development in Nairobi and Mombasa from 2013 to 2022.Research has found that both Nairobi and Mombasa have steadily improved their urban development levels over the past decade, but Nairobi's development speed and level are much higher than Mombasa's.The economic spillover effects in the core area of Nairobi have effectively radiated and driven the development of surrounding areas, while Mombasa is still in a polarized development stage.Nairobi mainly develops towards the"west(slightly south)-east(slightly north)"direction, while Mombasa develops along the"northeast-southwest"axis as a whole, and the urban development level in the northeast direction of both counties has increased significantly.Nairobi and Mombasa do not have significant spatial autocorrelation at the local secondary administrative region level, and their overall development shows a random distribution characteristic. However, there are significant spatial autocorrelation characteristics at the local third-level administrative region level, and internal development exhibits heterogeneity.
