A Study on the Structure of"VP1 Er(而)VP2"and"NP Zhi(之)VP"in Zhuangzi Neipian(《庄子·内篇》)
The conjunction"er(而)"is a high-frequency function word,and its usage is more complex when it connects two verbal words VP1 and VP2.According to the syntactic and semantic relationship between the two VPs,the structure of"VP1 er(而)VP2"in Neipian can be analyzed into four types:serial verb structure,modifier-core structure,co-ordinate structure,compact complex structure.The occurrence frequency of"NP zhi(之)VP"structure in Neipian is also high.The structural auxiliary word"zhi(之)"is placed in the middle of the subject-predicate structure"NP+VP",forming the nominal modifier-core structure"NP zhi(之)VP",which is equivalent to the modern Chinese"NP de(的)VP"in usage,and can only be distributed in the subject and object in syntax;semantically,it is not independent and is the argument component of the predicate core verb;pragmatically,it has referential function.
