The Relationship Between Syntactic Complexity and the Quality of Chinese Practical Writing by Japanese Native Speakers
This paper investigated the relationship between syntactic complexity and the quality of Chinese practical writing by Japanese native speakers, using 3 complexity indices at the sentence level and the phrase level respectively. The results showed that topic-comment unit(TC-unit)indices at the sentence level, did not correlate with writing scores significantly. At the phrase level, the total number of complex noun phrases and length of all complex premodifiers did not have remarkable correlation with writing scores, but the complex noun phrase ratio significantly related to writing quality and accounted for 17.7%of the variance in practical writing scores, reaching a medium effect size. These findings confirmed that the index of complex noun phrase ratio at the phrase level is an effective index to predict the quality of practical writing.
