Study on the Characters Used in the Names of Bronze Li in Shang and Zhou Dynasties
The names of bronze Li(鬲)vessels in the Shang and Zhou dynasties are diverse,and their corresponding relationships with utensils are very complex.Through a detailed analysis of the form,sound and meaning of the names of bronze Li(鬲)vessels,it can be seen that"Chi(彖)"and"Shi(豕)"are borrowed as the common name"Yi(彝)";"Zi((窒))"means that the bronze Li(鬲)is a vessel for offering sacrifices to food;"Li((餻))"is a variant of the character"Li(鬲)".The names of bronze Li(鬲)vessels in Shang and Zhou dynasties have certain epochal and regional characteristics,and also have special correspondence with the types of vessels.Through quantitative analysis,we can better understand the causes of the differences in the names of bronze Li(鬲)vessels.
