There is still no consensus in the academic community on the issue of the suffix of the Z rime alternation phenomena,and there are mainly four viewpoints:the suffix of the Z rime alternation phenomena is"zi(子)";the suffix of the Z rime alternation phenomena is"er(儿)";the suffix of the Z rime alternation phenomena is"tou(头)";the suffix of the Z rime alternation phenomena is a mix of"zi(子)"and"er(儿)".On the basis of pointing out the problems exist in these previous opinions through rational reflections and brief comments on them,the present study analyzes the suffix of the Z rime alternation phenomena from the perspectives of the spatial distribution,grammatical functions and the phonetic forms of the suffix"zi(子)"and the suffix"er(儿)"combined with the related dialect literature and linguistic facts.And this study argues that the suffix of the Z rime alternation phenomena is the earlier phonetic form of"er(儿)"and the earlier phonetic form of the retroflex final of"zi(子)",not"zi(子)",let alone"tou(头)".
