The Evaluative Function of Modal Adverb"Guaibude(怪不得)"and Its Association Analysis with Counter-expectation
The paper discusses the evaluative function of modal adverb"guaibude(怪不得)"from the perspective of communication and interaction.The cause-effect types of discourses containing"guaibude(怪不得)"can be divided into the normal cause-effect relationship and the non-normal one which deviates from normality.The former includes positive and negative evaluations,while the latter has a prominent tendency towards negative evaluations.Besides,the evaluation differences presented by"guaibude(怪不得)"can manifest in genres,with positive evaluations being the main focus in news reports,while negative evaluations are more pronounced in literary works and social networks.Meanwhile,a comprehensive examination of the syntax,semantics,and pragmatics of"guaibude(怪不得)"reveals the allocation of language resources in its evaluations.And the relationship between counter-expectation and the evaluative function of"guaibude(怪不得)"is sufficient but unnecessary.In the condition of the normal cause-effect relationship,over-expectation causes positive evaluations and below-expectation triggers negative evaluations;under the condition of the non-normal cause-effect relationship,however,negative evaluations are in dominance,but not all are necessarily the results of below-expectation.
