The Pronunciation Types of the Zhi-Zhuang-Zhang(知庄章)in Henan Dialect Island in the Taihu Lake Basin
This study conducted a field investigation of the pronunciation of Zhi-Zhuang-Zhang(知庄章)in the Henan dialect islands of the Taihu Lake basin, including 18 counties(districts, cities)in southern Jiangsu, northern Anhui, and northern Zhejiang.Based on the survey results, the pronunciation types are categorized into four:merged type,opening-closing contrast type Ⅰ,Changxu type,opening-closing contrast type Ⅱ.The merged type is less common, found only in Jintan, where Zhi-Zhuang-Zhang(知庄章)initials are unified, all pronounced with the[ts]series of initials. In the opening-closing contrast type Ⅰ,Zhi Er Zhuang(知二庄)and Zhi San Zhang(知三章)are both pronounced with the[ts]series of initials, while Zhi San Zhang(Yu Shan Zhen Hekou)is pronounced with the[tɕ]series of initials, consistent with the source dialect Henan Luoshan dialect. In Changxu Type,Zhi Er Zhuang(知二庄)is pronounced with the[ts]series of initials, while Zhi San Zhang(知三章)and Zhi San Zhang(Yu Shan Zhen Hekou)are both pronounced with the[t(ş)]series of initials, consistent with the source dialect Henan Guangshan dialect. The opening-closing contrast type Ⅱ is a result of the development and variation of the opening-closing contrast type Ⅰ and the Changxu Type, and is deeply influenced by the indigenous dialects. Both Zhi Er Zhuang(知二庄)and Zhi San Zhang(知三章)are pronounced with the[ts]series of initials, while Zhi San Zhang(Yu Shan Zhen Hekou)is in the intermediate stage of evolution—the postalveolar stage. The main source of immigrants for the Henan dialect island undergoing the evolution from ts-ts-tɕ to t-ts-tʃ is Luoshan;the main source of immigrants for the Henan dialect island where Zhi San Zhang(知三章)and Zhi Er Zhuang(知二庄)merge to pronounce the front alveolar sound is Guangshan, undergoing the evolution from ts-t(ş)-t(ş)to ts-ts-tʃ.
