An Experiment on Using Pills-Filled Shell Mold to Produce Hollow Nodular Iron Crankshaft
The process of changing solid nodular iron crankshaft into hollow crankshaft was described. The structure of the casting was improved including removing the small bosses at the holls to be machined, simplifying cores configuration.According to the dynamic balance requirement of the crankshaft product, the match gap between the cores and shell mold was designed as 0.1 mm.Pills-filled shell mold process and manual core-making process was used. The trial-produced castings was sampled and inspected, some quality problems were discovered and following relevant solution measures were adopted:adjusting the match gap at the curving parting surface of the shell mold to 0.3 mm,renewedly designing bracket clamp, improving shell hardening temperature and time, and brushing coating on the surface of sand cores.By using above improving measures, the 4 cylinders engine hollow crankshanft having the same dynamic balance as that of the solid crankshaft had been successfully produced, and the rejecting rate of the castings had been reduced to less than 4%.
