On Ye Xie's Evaluation of Shen Yue's Character and Poetry In His Yuan Shi
Ye Xie criticized Shen Yue in his book Yuan Shi for being narrow-minded,"hearing the excel-lence of others is like ten thousand arrows going through the heart",and strongly belittled his poems:not a single word of a poem is good",and"hero's deceiving others"is too one-sided.The statement of"ten thousand arrows through the heart"firstly came from the Anecdote Record written by Li Yong in the Tang Dynasty.His book is devot-ed to gods and ghosts,anecdotes about the history of tares and proves to be hardly believing.Shen Yue's poetic a-chievements are by no means what Ye Xie said,and many poets in the past have an objective evaluation of Shen Yue.And Shen Yue put forward"four tones and eight shortcomings",laid the foundation for the formation of met-rical poetry.It can be seen that there is much improvement in Ye Xie's evaluation of Shen Yue.
