Based on the main meteorological data of Xiaogan City from 1961 to 2020 and the traffic operation data of Xiaogan City from 2013 to 2020,this paper makes an analysis of the spatiotemporal characteristics of various meteorological elements that affect the six main highways in Xiaogan City and their relationship with traffic safety. It is concluded that winter is the season when meteorological disasters have the greatest impact on the normal operation of Xiaogan highways. The longest affecting day per year is 130.7 days of rainfall, and the least affecting day is only 5 days of snow.Except for high temperatures, the number of catastrophic weather events such as heavy fog, road icing, rainfall, snow and strong winds is decreasing with each passing year. The number of traffic accidents in the city is basically consistent with the trend of changes in the number of days with heavy fog, road icing, rainfall, snowfall and strong winds. The occurrence of traffic accidents is positively correlated with the number of days with road icing and significantly and negatively correlated with the number of days with heavy fog.The number of deaths from traffic accidents is positively correlated with the number of days with annual road icing, snowfall, strong winds and high temperatures, and significantly and negatively correlated with the number of days with heavy fog.And cor-responding measures are proposed to reduce and avoid meteorological disasters and accidents on highways based on the analysis of conclusions.
