A New Study on the Postal Roads in Xinjiang and Central Asia during the Mongol-Yuan Dynasty
During the Mongol-Yuan Dynasty, the rise and fall of postal roads in Xinjiang and Central Asia were close-ly related to the political situation and military activities at that time.In the early period of the empire, the postal roads from Mobei(North of the Gobi Desert)to Central Asia passed through the Altai Mountains. When this route was blocked by Shirigi's rebellion,Kublai Khan began to build postal stations in the Uighur region.Later, the securi-ty of postal roads in this area was threatened by Qaidu,so Kublai Khan turned to extend the postal roads on the south-ern edge of the Tarim Basin. After the Mongol Khanates made peace, various postal roads in Xinjiang and Central Asia revived, and began to decline in 1347.The unblocked postal roads in Xinjiang and Central Asia almost ran through the whole period of the Mongol-Yuan Dynasty. The discord between the Khanates did not hinder the develop-ment of material and cultural exchanges in Eurasia.
