The Misrepresentation of the So-called Li Bai's Qiu Feng Ci(Ode to Autumn Wind)and Its Causes
It is widely believed that Qiu Feng Ci(Ode to Autumn Wind),the lyric of a song played by Chinese seven-stringed zither, was composed by Li Bai,a well-known poet in China's Tang dynasty. In fact, the first half of the lyric is from San Wu Qi Yan(Three,Five,Seven Words)written by Li Bai.The other half, however, can be traced back to the poem Yi Niang Yu Li Sheng Xiang Si Ge(Love Song of Yi Niang and Li Sheng),and is believed to be revised from its last eight lines, which is recorded in Yan Fen Huan He Part Ji's,Volume One of Luo Ye's Zui Weng Tan Lu(A Drunken Man's Talk). And lyrics of a song played by Chinese seven-stringed zither,Xiang Fei Yuan(Resentment of Concubine Xiang),are also revised from the whole lines of the poem Yi Niang Yu Li Sheng Xiang Si Ge due to the far-fetched interpretation of a toponym appearing in the poem.It was a tradition to plagiarize lyrics from classical writ-ings when creating new works. In addition, the similarities in music attributes between Xiang Fei Yuan and Gu Qiu Feng(Song of the Autumn Wind),and the well-set ground for music circulation, dually lead to the wrong belief that Qiu Feng Ci was written by Li Bai and its widespread misrepresentation. This has actually caused adverse effects on general authors, readers, and scholars in non-Ancient Chinese Literature, through the developed publishing industry.
