From the synchronic and diachronic perspectives,this paper draws on the theoretical framework of con-struction grammar,and holds that the warning meaning of"Ni Gan VP(你敢VP)"is derived from the synergy of the semantic combination of structural components and the interactive context.Through the promotion of the frequency of use and cognitive reasoning,it gradually undergoes a conventionalized process of contextual suppression,and thereby forms a new pairing of"form and meaning/function".This construction performs a fixed discourse function of expressing warnings in typical appropriate contexts,revealing that,because the speaker determines that the listen-er is about to implement or continue an unexpected and high-risk act VP,the speaker will send out a warning direc-tion and hope that the listener can abandon this inappropriate behavior VP on the assumption that the listener can in-fer the punitive consequences with the help of context.
