Voluntary Teaching and Accumulation of Human Capital——Evidence from Postgraduate Voluntary Teaching Corps
Unequal educational resources are an important reason for the widening income gap and the solidification of social classes. The article uses postgraduate voluntary teaching corps as an external policy shock to identify the human capital accumulation effect of voluntary teaching. The results show that:firstly, the postgraduate voluntary teaching corps significantly improved the human capital accumulation of rural students in underdeveloped areas, that is,voluntary teaching significantly increased the completion rates of individual middle school and high school, and at the same time increased the lifelong education period by at least 0.2 years. However, the human capital accumulation effect of voluntary teaching has a lag effect.Secondly, voluntary teaching has improved the long-term performance of the individual labor market, significantly increasing the probability of becoming a professional technician and having better social pension insurance and social medical insurance.Thirdly, the results of heterogeneity analysis indicate that for boys and students whose parents have low levels of education, voluntary teaching has a more significant positive impact on their human capital accumulation. This means that voluntary teaching can help improve inter-generational mobility in education, but there may be gender inequality issues. The conclusion of the article provides inspiration for the policy design of poverty alleviation projects through voluntary teaching in the context of common prosperity.
