Research on the Mechanism of New-Type of Urbanization Driving Economic Growth:Evidence from Pilot Cities
In order to promote the paradigm transformation of the traditional urbanization path, regional piloting and promotion of new type of urbanization construction has been gradually carried out in recent years, and whether this new institutional model can lead regional economic growth is an important issue under the pressure of China's economic growth rate.Based on city-level data from 2003-2018,this paper uses the difference in differences method to assess the impact of new type of urbanization pilots on local economic growth and its mechanism. It is found that the new type of urbanization pilot significantly promotes urban economic growth. The mechanism analysis shows that enhancing industrial development through investment and increasing scientific and technological inputs are important paths for new type of urbanization to enhance economic growth.Further, the new type of urbanization policies have a"trickle-down effect",which can increase the total economic output of the cities around the pilots.Heterogeneity analyses show that the policy effects of new type of urbanization are concentrated in small and medium-sized cities with a better industrial base within city clusters. Therefore, new type of urbanization should focus on small and medium-sized cities with a strong industrial base and further enhance R&D in science and technology.
