Farmers'Professional Cooperatives with Community Member Participation in China:A Case Study in Beijing
While farmers'professional cooperatives have developed rapidly in China with innovative structures and operating models, this article presents a case study of a farmers'professional cooperative with community member participation, similar to community supported agriculture(CSA)farms in the United States and many other countries.Specifically, this article has developed a tripartite game model of a farmers'cooperative, peasant households living below the poverty line and the government with community member participation, derived the equilibrium solutions, analyzed the economic returns of two different types of farmers'cooperatives(conceptual or ideal cooperatives and corporate-type cooperatives),and simulated the impacts of peasant household participation scale. While the Nash equilibrium solution of the game model is that the farmers'cooperative adopts the community member participation model, the peasant households living below the poverty line participate in the cooperative, and the government subsidizes the farmers'cooperative, the positive economic impacts of community member participation in a conceptual or ideal cooperative are significantly better than that in a corporate-type cooperative but,on the other hand, there exists an optimal scale of poor peasant household participation in a corporate-type cooperative with community member participation. This study provides meaningful references and inspirations for the development of farmer cooperatives, government poverty alleviation, and community member participation.
