Cloud Macro and Micro Physical Properties During a Snowstorm Based on CloudSat and Aqua Satellite Data
Using CloudSat satellite data sets of 2B-CLDCLASS and 2B-CWC-RVOD and CERES Aqua MODIS Edition 3A data sets, the vertical distribution of cloud microphysical properties such as ice effective radius, ice water content and ice number concentration and the spatial distribution of cloud macro-physical properties such as cloud amount and mean cloud effective height for low layer cloud in a snowstorm of Northern Xinjiang were analyzed in 2010 December 2nd-4th. The results showed that, during the snowstorm, the clouds were distributed below 12 km, and ice effective radius and ice water content were increased along with the cloud height increasing. The ice number concentration showed a unimodal distribution in vertical height, and the high values of ice number concentration were distributed in the clouds at the central which were in 5.5 km. The values of cloud amount for low layer cloud were less than 40% before and after the snowstorm while those were greater than 60% in the snowstorm. The values of mean cloud effective height for low layer cloud were less than 6km before and after the snowstorm while those were greater than 6 km in the snowstorm.
