Urban Design in the Process of Spatialization of Capital: An Analysis Framework
Various concepts of city are discussed from different perspectives, especially from Marxism. It is argued that city is not an object but a historical process; the early modern city was a kind of spatial form created to promote trading efficiency and reducing trading cost; they emerged from the preindustrial society centuries ago but have now met with huge global challenges and changes seriously;their development are dominated by crucial competitions between and among cities,as well as political, administrative and financial relationships of the central and the local government; and finally, urban design is a spatial instrument employed by the (local) government to address the economic and social crisis from within and without.Alternative explanation of the history and theory of urban design in advanced western countries are discussed, based on a purposed framework of the process of capital accumulation relating to the production of physical object, society and ideology.Urban design in early modern China as a spatial tool and discipline are outlined and discussed carefully. The key points of the paper are to examine the theory of urban design instead of the theory in urban design.
