Space as Methodology:Notes on the Design of the House of Raums
The"House of Raums"project is located deep in a high-density village in Xiaotangshan,Changping,Beijing,where sunlight,lighting and ventilation are very limited.After studying the details of the construction,the design potential of the basic architectural fact of"raum"is discovered,and an attempt is made to use it as a methodology to form a conceptual order:Raums,which precisely meets the spatial scale required by users within the structural limitations of the four L-shaped columns;Group of the raums,which examines the relationship between groups of raums based on the basic spatial scale;Between the raums,to consider the use of space between raums and its significance;Up the raums,to consider the design of roof on the basis of the order of the raums;Out of the raums,to focus on the design of the envelope of the raums with a higher level of thermal comfort,ventilation,lighting and other design.Eventually,the raums connect many aspects of the project:structure,space,function,house culture(courtyard),sunlight,lighting and ventilation.It is not only a kind of"gathering",but also reflects a criticism of real estate house/housing design that is steeped in capital and indulged in"spatial economics".
