Rooted in the Vernacular,Growing Towards the Sun:Inheritance and Research of Traditional Residential Architecture of Kunming University of Science and Technology
The unique natural environment and rich cultural history of Yunnan have given rise to a diverse coexistence of historical towns and traditional architectural styles, along with distinctive regional and ethnic characteristics. This paper reviews the journey and achievements of the faculty and students of Architecture and City Planning in Kunming University of Science and Technology in researching traditional dwellings. It highlights both the rustic architectural qualities of Yunnan's traditional dwellings, villages, and historical towns, and reflects the academic spirit of our researchers who immerse themselves in the ethnic villages of China's southwestern frontier.Guided by the actions and thoughts of predecessors,we have cultivated a new generation of professionals dedicated to vernacular architecture and traditional building conservation. These individuals have thrived, expanding their focus from"rural dwellings and villages"to a holistic consideration of"human habitats,"and shifting their academic perspective from"local identity"to broader concepts of"regional, indigenous, and peripheral"studies. This evolution has facilitated significant contributions to the preservation, inheritance, and sustainable development of China's traditional architecture and historical towns.
