Effect of Sensemaking on Career Calling among Medical Students:The Roles of In-Group Identification and Conscientiousness
Little is known about the antecedents and development mechanisms of career calling.Based on social identity theory,this study investigated the impact of sensemaking on career calling and the underlying mechanisms.With a three-wave longitudinal analysis of 554 medical students,the results show that:(1)Sensemaking has a positive impact on career calling;(2)In-group identification mediates the positive relationship between sensemaking and career calling even after controlling for the mediating effect of professional duty;(3)Conscientiousness moderates the effect of in-group identification on career calling and the mediating effect of in-group i-dentification.Results have important implications for universities to cultivate individual career calling.
