The Mechanisms and Amelioration of Children's Video Deficit Effect
With the development of digital media, video has become a crucial way to obtain information for children. However, young children of ten demonstrate less learning after viewing a video presentation than after viewing a face-to-face presentation of the same information, which is called video deficit effect.Explanations like perceptual encoding theory, theory of dual representation, theory of representational flexibility were proposed to reveal part of the mechanisms of the video deficit effect, suggesting that the immature cogni-tive ability of young children is the key to children's poor learning from video, and which may be ameliorated by prolonging video pres-entation.Discounting hypothesis and social experience theory suggested that increasing video experience and scaffolding children with social hints can also help children learn from the video.Future studies could further investigate the ways to ameliorate children's poor learning from videos, clarifying the relationships between theories and exploring the ways for children to benefit from digital media.
