Development and Psychometric Analysis of the Appearance Anxiety Scale
Objective:To develop the Appearance Anxiety Scale and examine its reliability and validity.Based on the literature analysis and semi-structured interview results,a theoretical model was constructed, and a questionnaire of appearance anxiety suitable for the Chinese context was developed.2138 valid data were obtained through convenient sampling for item analysis and reliability and validity test.761 post-90s youth were tested to calculate their criterion related validity with the existing social anxiety questionnaire and self objectification questionnaire. Results:The Appearance Anxiety Scale consisted of 22 items, including 3 factors, namely, dissatisfaction with body image, deviation of individual attention, social environmental pressure.61.12%of the total variance was explained.Confirma-tory factor analysis showed that the factor model of each dimension fit well(x2/df=4.87,CFI=0.93,TLI=0.92,RMSEA=0.07,SRMR=0.05).The Appearance Anxiety Scale scores were positively correlated with scores of Self-Objectification Scale and Social Anxiety Scale(r=0.23-0.48,ps<0.01).The cronbach's α of the total scale was 0.95,and the cronbach's α of each dimension were 0.86-0.94;the split-half reliability of the total scale was 0.85,and the split-half reliability of each dimension were 0.73-0.91;The retest reliability of the total scale was 0.70,and the retest reliability of each dimension were 0.60-0.73.Conclusion:It sug-gests that the Appearance Anxiety Scale has relatively good reliability and validity, which could be used as an assessment of appearance anxiety tool.
