The Influential Relationship between Government Responsiveness,Political Support,and Political Participation:A Moderating Analysis Based on the Political Values of"Benefiting the People and Revitalizing the Country"
Institutionalized political participation is essential for modernizing national governance systems and capacities,and the responsiveness of government significantly influences public engagement in institutionalized political activities.However,existing literature lacks comprehensive analyses and discussions on how government responsiveness affects citizens'political participation un-der specific conditions.This study constructs a theoretical model based on public choice theory and self-determination theory to ex-amine the relationship between government responsiveness and public political participation.To test the model,we collected 11 000 valid data points from 31 provinces,autonomous regions,and municipalities directly under the central government in China.Statisti-cal analyses using Structural Equation Modeling(SEM)and the Bootstrap method were conducted.The results indicate that(1)government responsiveness positively influences citizens'political participation,(2)political support mediates the relationship be-tween government responsiveness and political participation,(3)the political values of"benefiting the people and revitalizing the country"have a moderating effect on the relationship between government responsiveness and political support,and(4)the political values of"benefiting the people and revitalizing the country"significantly moderate the mediating role of political support in the rela-tionship between government responsiveness and citizens'political participation.This study reveals the mechanism through which government responsiveness affects political participation from the perspectives of government behavior and citizen experience.It ex-pands and enhances the application context and effectiveness of public choice theory and self-determination theory.In practice,the findings provide an empirical research foundation and practical guidance for improving government responsiveness,enhancing citi-zens'political support,and promoting interaction between the government and the people.
