An Analysis of the Function of Buying Land Coupons to Control Tombs during the Han,Jin and Southern Dynasties:Centered on Brick-based Land Purchase Coupons
The writing style for land purchase vouchers underwent significant changes during the Han,Jin,and Southern Dy-nasties,occurring in three distinct stages:the early Eastern Han,the late Han,Wu,Jin,and the Southern Dynasties. These chan-ges also influenced the function of tomb control associated with these vouchers.During the early Eastern Han Dynasty, land pur-chase vouchers had a writing style that resembled practical sales contracts. However, the burial artifacts and the format of the sales contracts determined their inherent tomb control attributes. These attributes were not influenced by the religious or immortal elements present in the voucher text.During the late Han,Wu and Jin Dynasties, the content of land purchase vouchers became more com-prehensive,with a strong emphasis on religious and immortal elements.A trend towards formalization emerged during this period. However, the way in which land vouchers were used for tomb control remained unchanged, and their tomb control function did not significantly improve. The emergence of special land purchase vouchers mixed with annotations at the end of the Han Dynasty did not represent the mainstream development of land purchase vouchers during this period.During the Southern Dynasty, influenced by Ta-oism,land purchase vouchers began to incorporate religious language that expressed dissatisfaction with gods and officials, provided solace to the deceased, and protected the living.By the Southern Liang Dynasty, this new writing style had become the dominant trend in various regions of the Southern Dynasty. This transformation expanded the tomb control methods associated with land pur-chase vouchers and enhanced their tomb control function.
