Translation Norms in the English Translation of Lunyu:With James Legge's English Version for Example
Translation norms influences the translator's translation choices and application of translation strategies, and plays a guiding role in the whole translation process.Judging from the perspective of translation norms,James Legge does ot always follow translation norms;sometimes he violates them. The premise is whether the translation norms are in line with the purpose of translation. He would follow translation norms if they are in conformity, and violate them if not.Legge's practice suggests that the translator should abide by translation norms if they help him achieve translation purpose;on the contrary, the translator should give full play to his subjectivity and translate the charm of the original on the basis of being faithful to the original text,so as to achieve the purpose of spreading the source language culture.Translation norms are only means, not ends.To translate a masterpiece, the translator should not only follow the norms, but also follow his heart while not exceeding the rules.
