It is generally believed that the most successful aspect of Sha Ting's novels is his satirical writing about the evil gentry and the Gowned Brothers in the villages of the Rear Area during the war,and the complex network of power relations behind them.However,from a comprehensive perspective of Sha Ting's novels,it can be seen that while he vigorously criticizes the local tyrants and evil gentry,the township authoritarians,and the ambitious,he also portrays a group of people on the margins of the grassroots regime who are in an awkward situation.These"seniors"who wander on the edge of grassroots political power and are rooted in the soil of rural society with rich experience are special groups in rural areas.They have certain social and cultural resources,carry some inherent vitality of traditional villages,are an important factor in rebuilding grassroots society,and contain the possibility of"transformation"and growth into new rural subjects.It is through this type of person that Sha Ting presents the complex emotional context in grassroots society in the Rear Area.
