A Survey of Overwintering Mandarin Duck Population Along the Changjiang River of the Three Gorges Reservoir Around the Water Level Rising to 172 Meters
From 2006 to 2010,a survey was made of bird distribution during the winter season along the course and bank of the Changjiang River and 12 tributaries of the Three Gorges Reservoir. The result showed that the fluctuation in water level influenced,to some extent, the distribution status of the overwintering population of mandarin duck(Aix galericulata). The total population of mandarin duck numbered 100-120.The overwintering mandarin ducks disappeared in the river course of the Changjiang River after the water level rose to an altitude of 172 m and 168 m,and they were distributed mainly in 3 tributaries of Chanjiang River in January of 2009 and 2010.
