Imaging modalities and treatment strategies for reversing coronary atherosclerosis
The evolution of coronary atherosclerosis is a continuous process. However, the temporal evolution of plaque formation processes, such as inflammation, lipid accumulation, calcification,or plaque rupture and healing, has rarely been continuously monitored in the human body.Visualization of the progression of plaque in the vessel can help to guide the patient management and understand the effect of treatment. With the continuous development of imaging technology,high-risk plaque characteristics such as plaque composition, necrotic core volume, fibrous cap thickness and positive remodeling can predict the risk of cardiovascular events, and also suggest plaque increase or regression. However, the degree of plaque regression varies greatly with the nature of the plaque. This article reviews the imaging modalities used to evaluate plaque regression and therapeutic strategies that may induce regression of coronary atherosclerotic plaques.
