Tracing the Roots and Progress in Theories of Children's Agency
The exploration of children's agency has attracted considerable interest worldwide, with a renewed focus on its conceptualization.Children's agency embodies a fundamental dichotomy between individual and societal agency, and between children's agency and social structures. This dichotomy is deeply embedded in the theory of children's agency and has been intensified by developments in the new sociology of childhood and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. In the context of navigating and surpassing this dichotomy, studies on children's agency have evolved into four main theoretical frameworks:the liberal, the socio-cultural,the post-structuralist,and the pragmatic paradigms. Each framework provides unique theoretical insights and impacts empirical research differently. For Chinese researchers, delving into this area not only means engaging with the central debates and forefront developments of children's agency studies but also contributing to the scholarly development of this research area. Moreover,it entails challenging the predominance of the Global North in this domain to amplify the presence of Chinese academic perspectives.
