Antitumor Response of Tumor Infiltrating Lymphocytes in Nephroblastoma:an Electron and Light Microscopic Study
Histopathological changes of nephroblastoma were studied in 11 cases under electron and light microscopy. In ultrastructtual view, the lymphocytes were found to be attached to the oncocytes by their pseudopodia in 9 cases.Only in 4 cases, however, the oncocyte membrance and cytoplasm adjacent to the lymphocytes were damaged, but the lymphocytes were intact.According to the similar studies of adult malignancies, the phenomenon of infiltrating lymphocytemediated oncocyte lysis probably reflects the presence of antitumor response in nephroblastoma. The study reveals a direct morphologic evidence that the infiltrating lymphocytes may be cytotoxic to the oncocytes in some nephroblastoma cases.
