As a severe gastrointestinal disease, necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) affects premature infants with a high mortality. However, its pathogenesis remains largely elusive. As components of innate immunity, monocytes or macrophages play an important role in the onset and development of NEC. This review summarized the latest researches of monocytes or macrophages in the pathogenesis of NEC.
