The Modern Chinese Civilization:Criteria and Interpretation
Clarifying the criteria for civilization is one of the key prerequisites for the construction of an autonomous knowledge system for the modern Chinese civilization. This is not only a theoretical need to break the West's stereotyping of non-Western civilizations with their biased criteria, but also a practical need to enhance the international dissemination of the modern Chinese civilization. The chief criterion of the modern Chinese civilization is the Chinese concept of human rights. As promoting human rights are one of the core agendas of modern civilization it can serve as a local criterion for evaluating the historical develop-ment of the community of the Chinese nation and a universal criterion for evaluating the development of hu-man civilization.Guided by Marxist ideal of pursuing free and comprehensive human development, the Chi-nese model of human rights puts emphasis on the existential right and the right of comprehensive develop-ment,and is committed to meeting the people's needs for a better life.More importantly,it is not a closed and condescending theoretical system. On the one hand,it stresses the importance of exchanges and mutual learning among different civilizations, promoting exchanges and cooperation on human rights among coun-tries,and facilitating the better development of the human rights cause in all countries. On the other hand,it stresses the development of the theoretical demonstration of Chinese-style human rights, the enhancement of the theoretical research on economic and social rights as the foundation of human rights, and the promotion of the international community's understanding of Chinese-style human rights civilization and the modern Chinese civilization.
