Over-Emphasis on Personality and Virtues and False Distinction of Cognitive Hierarchies:Reflections on Ma Yifu's Thoughts on Knowledge and Value
In the face of cultural imperialism of West in modern times,Ma Yifu proposed that a modern value system of Confucian culture should be reconstructed centering on the Six Arts. However,Ma's neglect of substantial knowledge and over-affirmation of intrinsic morality within individuals not only deconstructs the existential significance of his previously constructed knowledge system centered on the six arts, but also blurs the issue of cognitive stratification and creates the phenomenon of dichotomy and opposition between knowledge and value.Although the phenomenon of dichotomy and opposition between knowledge and value is common in traditional Confucianism and even in traditional Chinese thought,in reality, knowledge and val-ue cannot be completely divided and put in opposition, and the construction of any value system cannot be a-chieved without appropriate cognitive activities as the basis, and the value orientation that belittles knowledge while over emphasizes personality and virtue will ultimately lead to a unitary, absolute and eternalized system of moral value which is hyper-historical and hyper-realistic in nature.
