Meta-Philosophy:Towards a Social Space Theory of Use—Interpreting Refervor's The Production of Space
At the first level of meta-philosophy,Lefebvre illustrates directly the problem of substantialist cognition of space,i.e.,the epistemological error of mistaking the empty field of substantial objects and heaps of things for the relational field realm of social space. This is also the error with space fetishism in general. At the second level, for Marx, the capitalist commodity exchange, money circulation and capital flow in the per-spective of economic fetishism, always take place in the different urban architectural spaces, production spaces, and spatial planning. It becomes spatial fetishism when one dwells on the physical amenities, such as spatial ar-chitecture,which obscures the field of economic relations.Lefebvre calls for that the production of a new so-cio-space in two ways:one is to put appropriation over domination, which involves a fundamentally trans-form the relationship between human beings and nature;the second is put use over exchange, which involves taking the place of the exchange logic of the capitalist commodity-market with the inherent usefulness of space itself. From the perspective of the analysis of space usage,it means to take a shift from the consumption space used for exchange back to spatial order which catering to the real need of the human body, specifically, back to the overall spatial order of the body.
