Zhu Qianzhi's Confucian Emotionalism and His Construction of Historical-Cultural Philosophy
Interpreting Confucianism from the perspective of emotionalist philosophy of life,Zhu Qianzhi believes that,by its nature benevolent, emotion is the essence of life in the universe, that the evolu-tion of life was the flow of true feelings, and that life and society are universally emotional. On the basis of emotionalism,he constructs a philosophy of history which regards instinct(the emotion of survival)as the driving force of historical evolution, and historical evolution as mutual aid.For him, history is driven by three instincts, forming three stages of development and three forms. He also provided a philosophical interpretation of culture from the perspective of emotionalism, arguing that culture is essentially a stream of life which con-stantly accumulates and innovates human experience and there are four types and stages of cultural develop-ment.Although the philosophical Chinese culture lagged behind scientific culture of the West,it had universal value because of its rich artistic spirit. The revival of modern Chinese culture will eventually move towards an emotional artistic culture on the basis of full absorption of the scientific culture. His profound and innovative ideas has made important contributions to the development of modem Confucianism and the construction of modern Chinese historical and cultural philosophy. However, his emotionalist interpretation of Zhouyi has signs of forced interpretation.
