The Crisis of Great Unity and the Political Construction of a Thinker's Identity:Reasons and Significance for the Construction of Li Wei's Ancestral Temple in the Wanli Period
The proposal to build the ancestral temple of Li Wei was initiated in the twenty-second year of the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, when the rebellion of Tusi(chieftain)in Bozhou, the Yang clan, was imminent and the unity of the country was facing a serious crisis. Therefore, its construction carried spe-cial significance because Li Wei's special family background, ideological characteristics and ways of dealing with life were in sharp contrast with the Tusi like the Yangs in Bozhou. The central government of the Ming dynasty sought to demonstrate power and value tendencies through the construction of the ancestral temple, and actively guided the local Tusi to return to the state and be naturalized by Confucian culture. At the same time,it formed barriers in the areas where many Tusi were located, and established a Confucian cultural area to prevent the collusion among Tusi and the spread of Tusi culture, which was detrimental to the unity of the country.Consequently,Li Wei's identity was endowed with a strong political color and acquired a political i-dentity other than that of a thinker. Therefore, the purpose of the Ming Dynasty's commendation of Li Wei and the construction of the ancestral temple was more political than promoting his thought. From this,we can clearly see the complex relations between culture and politics, politics and philosophy,as well as thought and reality.
