"Establishing Our Historiography on the Basis of Science":Xia Nai and His Research on Modern Chinese History
Before receiving the archaeological professional training,Xia Nai's study process had several turning points.The sense of distress stimulated by the national disaster and the desire to acquire historical knowledge are the main reasons why he chose to transfer to the history department of Tsinghua University.He focused on the study of modern Chinese diplomatic history and economic history,and put forward some views that were new at that time.He not only emphasized the necessity of studying modem Chinese history,but also paid attention to the use of new materials and comprehensive comparison of Chinese and foreign materials to obtain more accurate conclusions,hoping to establish Chinese historiography,especially the study of modern history,on the basis of science.Xia Nai specialized in modern Chinese history and had research experience in modern Chinese history,which could be regarded as an effect of training historiography talents in the history Department of Tsinghua University presided by Jiang Tingfu.This academic training also deeply influenced his future archaeological research.
