The New Culture Movement and the Flourishing of Publications
One of the important orientations of the New Culture Movement, which emerged after the May Fourth Movement, was to popularize culture among the public.Among various methods of popularization, the flourishing of publications was the most effective and measurable. In the beginning, magazines were the major publications. There was said to be 400 kinds of vernacular newspapers and magazines established during the New Culture Movement, which actually included the ones issued before the May Fourth Movement and the ones run by students during the May Fourth Movement.Newspapers and magazines that truly started during the New Culture Movement and disseminated new culture only occupied less than a half. After widespread criticism of the shallow and repetitive nature of the publications, the advocates of the movement turned their attention to series of books. However, popularized academics inevitably ended in generality. As a result, the publication of series of books came to a standstill quickly.Advocating criticism and emphasizing science, people of insight stimulated creativity by specialization, which saved the New Culture Movement from bankruptcy.
