Gender Negotiation in Cross-Cultural Perspective——Woolf's Feminism and Modem Chinese Literati
The evaluation and acceptance of Woolf's feminism by Chinese people began in the first half of the 20th century, initiated by several Chinese literati who had contacted with Woolf.Xu Zhimo initially harbored a prejudice against Woolf, but a few years later he became the faithful supporter and disseminator of Woolf's feminist views. The identification with Woolf's A Room of One's Own strengthened Lin Huiyin's writing anxiety and thus formed her personal traits in female writing.Encouraged by Woolf's communication and influenced by his works,Ling Shuhua's restrained and vague female writing consciousness began to become clear and firm.In the 1940s,Xiao Qian's analysis of Woolf's feminist thought was more objective and rational. These acceptance, identification, reference, and commentary on Woolf's feminist views collectively demonstrated the sharp and broad cross-cultural perspective of the Chinese intellectual community at that time,as well as the increasingly cautious and rational acceptance trajectory in the context of Sino Western cultural dialogue.
