On the Systematic Relationship Between Affection and Virtue According to Thomas Aquinas
Thomas Aquinas explained the emotion as the movement of appetite, including the move-ment of sensitive appetite and rational appetite(the will). He defined the virtue as the habits of human act chosen out of reason or will.Passions in sensitive appetite are related to reason at the highest activity level, while affection in rational appetite is consistent with reason. Therefore, emotion can be related to virtue and form a whole system. In this system, the internal principle of the relationship between emotion and virtue is the reason, and love is the foundation and source of the system. At the same time, the sys-tem of relationship between emotion and virtue points to the dual level of life end and happiness,so the relationship system has a higher-lower structure.
