On the Dependence of Time on Space in Kant's Philosophy——A Systematic Reconstruction
Kant distinguishes between forms of intuition and formal intuitions, and holds that space and time can be considered as both of them. This article argues that space and time as forms of intuition are mutually independent, irreplaceable, and irreducible;but as formal intuitions they are jointly related and produced by the transcendental synthesis of imagination. The generation of the intuition of time de-pends on the intuition of space in terms of the materials, the conceptual activities, and the image of a line. The constitution of the time-schemata and the objective time-relations also presupposes something persisting in the intuition of space.Consequently, the intuition of space is necessary and fundamental for constituting the intuition of time.
