The Fate of Intellectual Women in Times of Society,Family and Literature Transformation——A study centered on the two sisters,Chen Jiefen and Chen Hengzhe, from the Chen family in Hengshan,Hunan
Chen Jiefen and Chen Hengzhe were both from the renowned Chen family in Hengshan,Hunan Province.Three generations of the ancestors above them moved from place to place while serving as government officials, thus eventually forming a distinguished bu-reaucratic household in Changzhou,Jiangsu Province by the end of the Qing dynasty.Though living in the distinct eras of the late Qing and early Republican China, they advocated for feminist thought and promoted women's writing through various means such as editing publications, teaching, and creative work.Their lives, however, turned out very differently.Centered on Chen Jiefen and Chen Heng-zhe,this study analyzes the impact of their political and family life on their literary creation and destinies, and explores diachronically the successiveness and creativity of the intellectual women in the social transformation period of the late Qing and early Republican peri-od by adopting a social historical approach. This study is also meant to bridge the long-standing gap between the old and new literary concepts and examine comprehensively the history of women's thought in modern Chinese history.
