Julian Barnes is a famous contemporary British novelist who won the Booker Prize in 2011.Historical memory is an impor-tant theme in Barnes'novels.Barnes deeply demonstrates the important role of historical memory and identity construction through a variety of artistic forms.In his novels,the perplexity and oblivion of personal memory lead to an identity crisis,while the retrieval of memories contributes to the construction of self-identity.Memory retrieval,on the other hand,is involved in the construction of iden-tity.Moreover,the state also makes use of the historical memory to shape the national identity of its citizens,while the supranational political community also uses the implantation of historical memory to maintain the identity of its members and consolidate its political status.
